Alfred Eugene Schoen was born November 9, 1930, to Emil Schoen and Emma Kujath in rural Gladstone. He died January 13, 2016.
During his elementary school years in Gladstone, he and his sister Pauline both spoke German in school as a natural part of their German heritage.
Farming was always in his DNA. At the age of 17, he planted his first crop on his grandmother Ida Schoen's farm. He later purchased the farm in 1957, where he and his wife Lila resided until retirement in 1993.
From 1951 to 1963, Alfred served in the Army Reserve as a supply sergeant, as well as continuing his pursuit of farming.
On June 1, 1952, he married Lila Seggerman, who was always the love of his life. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. Both were lifelong Nebraska Husker fans, attending local and some away games for 20 years. They also enjoyed golfing and traveling in retirement.
When his wife Lila began to experience dementia, he lovingly cared for her in their home for several years. Alfred was preceded in death by his wife Lila of 61 years and his sister Pauline Kaaz, as well as his parents.
He is survived by his sister, Carolene Schoen Mitchell and husband Donald Mitchell, along with numerous nieces and nephews of his wife.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on January 18, 2016, at the Fairbury Presbyterian Church with Pastor Cross officiating and cemetery service to follow. Luncheon will be served after the services at the Fairbury Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church.
