Bertha M. Schroeder

Bertha Marie Schroeder was born November 9, 1929, in Hollenberg, Kansas to Albert and Irene (Kuck) Wollenberg. She died at Gardenside Long Term Care February 1, 2015. She was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hollenberg on April 25, 1943.

She graduated from Hollenberg High School May 14, 1947. After getting her teaching certificate at Fort Hays State Teachers College, she began her teaching career at District 25, Washington County Kansas in September 1947. In 1950 her parents moved to a farm in Jefferson County Nebraska and she began teaching at District 47 in Reynolds. Here she met and married Leo Schroeder on May 2, 1951.
In 1959 she began teaching in Fairbury and remained there until her retirement. During this time, she obtained her Nebraska teaching certificate from Fairbury Junior College, her Bachelor’s degree from Doane College and her administration certificate from UNL. When she retired, she had taught for 41 years. After her retirement she worked at the Fairbury Walmart for 25 years. Bertha also served as Church Secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents,a baby brother, and her husband Leo.

She is survived by her son Alan and wife Cindy of Omaha, daughter Bobbi Jo and husband Chuck Nieman of Hanover, Kansas; Grandchildren Katie Schroeder of Omaha, Crystal Schroeder of Valencia, CA, Rory Nieman and Cody Nieman of Manhattan, Kansas. Brothers Bob and wife Ruth of Lincoln, and Gene and wife Claire of Littleton, CO, sister-in-laws Marie Schroeder of Council Bluffs and Martha Schroeder of Hebron and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday, February 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury with Pastor Ken Hart officiating. The family will greet friends Thursday from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home. Memorials will go to the family’s choice in lieu of flowers. There will be no public viewing.
