It is with great sadness that the family of Bruce Swartz, 65, of Fairbury, Nebraska announces his passing on February 15, 2020. Bruce was born on February 3 rd , 1955 in Fairbury, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, also in Fairbury. Bruce attended Saint Michael’s School and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1973. He attended Fairbury Junior College. Bruce at one time was on the City Council and a longstanding member of the Fairbury Elks. He devoted his life to helping people and served diligently as an American Family Insurance agent for 36 years.
He was also once active in Community Theatre. Bruce loved to sing and he performed in several popular musicals such as “Oklahoma” and “Godspell”. He also sang at weddings and funerals. He beautifully sang familiar songs such as “Ave Maria, and “Our Father”.
Bruce had an extraordinary passion for youth, working on the Youth Center board. He worked hard helping to build the center and shape it into a place for youth to grow and develop. One of the highlights of his life was teaching firearm safety and conceal carry for the NRA.
Bruce and Patty enjoyed camping with their family at the Harlan County Dam and Crystal Springs. He loved boating, fishing and hunting. He frequently played cards, chess and checkers with his grandchildren. He had a special fondness of texting his grandchildren to tell them goodnight, and always reminding them how much he loved them. Of all these traits, Bruce was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was very proud to have them all in his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents Delmar & Donna (Gibson) Swartz, and an infant sister.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife Patty, and children; Jeremy Swartz (Kandi Swartz), Lance Swartz, Justin Schmit (Jade Schmit) and daughter Hillary Christ. Bruce was the loving grandfather of nine grandchildren; Zachary Swartz, Kodey Swartz, Kaden Swartz, Cody Swartz, Paige Maschman, Madison Christ, Hailey Christ, Chloe Christ, and Dean Schmit, his two sisters Debbie (Donnie) Kern and Brenda (Doyle) Mannschreck, several nieces, nephews, cousins and so many loving friends.
Services will be Friday, February 21, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home Chapel. The family will greet friends at the Funeral Home from 5 – 7 Thursday evening followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Memorials will go to the Family’s Choice.
