CELIA HELEN (LEIDIG) SCHMIDT was born May 12, 1945 to Dorothy (Finch) Leidig and Cecil M. Leidig at the Old Lynch Clinic in Fairbury, Nebraska. She died at her home in rural Western, NE on June 3, 2016.
She lived with her family on a farm near Morrowville, KS and went to school in Washington, KS where she graduated in 1963.
After high school, she worked at the Lutheran Hospital in the business office, and was active in Nebraska Rural Youth, where she met Richard E. Schmidt. They were married April 2, 1967 at the Methodist Church in Washington, KS. She quit work to become a full-time wife and mother.
To this union were added 7 children - 3 boys and 4 girls.
Later, Celia worked once again for the Lutheran Hospital, then at Swingster's in Fairbury as a garment worker, the DeWitt ViseGrip factory, and then to Walmart where she worked as a cashier for many years until she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and later Lewy Body Dementia.
She fought a good fight, and kept on with homemaking, grandmothering, and church activities until these became impossible for her.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of rural Swanton, NE; the Baptist Church of Western, NE; and the Assembly of God in Fairbury.
She was preceded in death by: Her parents - Cecil and Dorothy Leidig, one sister: Linda Leidig, one brother-in-law: Robert (Bill) Shorman; and two sons: James Clark Schmidt & Samuel Schmidt.
She leaves behind to remember her:
Her husband Richard of Western, NE; Son Thorin Schmidt and wife Melissa of Missouri; Daughters Caroline Beetley and husband Michael of Chicago, IL; Anita Burns and husband Nathan of Lincoln, NE; Valerie Buller and husband Jon of Lincoln, NE; & Donna Ramsey and husband Darcy of Lincoln, NE.Five Sisters: Joyal Crain, Marvel Boston, Carol Shorman, Zetta Sheetz, and Wilma Leidig/Leatherwood. Two brothers: Lonnie Leidig and Jerry Leidig. Also ten grandchildren: Tevye, Marisa, and Aidan Schmidt; Maisie and Ivy Burns; Mason, Abby and Katherine Buller; and Emma & Sam Ramsey.....plus many relatives and friends.
Funeral services from Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Homes to be held at Presbyterian Church in Fairbury on June 8th at 11:00 AM. Lunch by Women's Ministries of Assembly of God following the service.
