Charlie J. Barber

March 25, 1924 — July 24, 2014

Charlie J. Barber 90, formerly of Diller, passed away July 24, 2014 at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury. He was born March 25, 1924 to Les and Bertha (Long) Barber on the family farm in rural Diller, Nebraska and was the seventh of twelve children. He graduated in 1942 from Diller High School.

On August 8, 1946 he married Verneal Schnuelle in the parsonage of the Hope Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Harbine, Nebraska. They had one son, Charles.

Charlie was a farmer his entire life, starting out helping the family until he had saved enough to buy his own land. In addition to his passion for farming, he started a dairy operation and had a fondness for Ayrshire cows. Aside from his love of family, an occasional "trip south" to try his luck on the slots, and tending to and sharing his garden, what he loved doing most, was putting in a long, hard day's work on the farm. He was a wonderful grandpa and great grandpa and loved attending their activities.

He is survived by his son: Charles Barber & wife Ardith of Diller, NE., grandchildren: Marcy Barber of Diller, NE., Angie Clifford & husband Chris of Diller, NE., Jeff Barber & significant others, Sandi and son Jack, of Lincoln, NE., Great Grandchildren: Samantha & Cale Clifford of Diller, NE., sister: Arlene Wolter of Columbus, NE., sisters-in-law: Loretta Barber of Beatrice, NE., Carol Barber of California, Elaine Patras & husband John of Elkhorn, NE., Joyce Neumann of DeWitt, NE., Janet Lawrence & husband Conrad of Henderson, NV., brother-in-law: Richard Schnuelle & wife Jean of Jansen, NE., and many nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Verneal Barber, brothers Bernard Barber & wife Hilda, Robert Barber & wife Esther, Kenneth Barber, Daniel Barber, Darwin Barber, sisters Margie Jones & husband Bud, Ruth Detter & husband Freddie, Eunice Janssen & husband John, Dorothy Korthals & husband Elmer, Marilyn Volle & husband Ken, and brother-in-law Don Wolter.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday July 28, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Diller, NE., with Pastor Mark Liscom officiating. There will be a visitation with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday July 27, 2014. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, Diller, NE. Memorials will go to the Family's Choice. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
