Dickie Del Greenwood of Steele City, NE passed away December 10, 2020 at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, NE. Dickie was born July 5, 1933 in Steele City, NE. He was the oldest child of Del and Leone (Staley) Greenwood.
Dickie went to elementary and high school in Alexandria, NE. He was drafted into the Army 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955. While in the Army he became quite a sharpshooter in the Artillery Division. He was stationed in Fort Riley, KS and then transferred to Detroit, MI.
He worked for Union Pacific Railroad after high school and returned to work in the signal department after his honorable discharge from the Army. He loved his job and had many friends along the Nebraska and Kansas divisions.
He loved to tell stories and would tell them to whoever would listen. He collected Union Pacific Railroad memorabilia. He loved his collection of cars and guns of which he had many. He loved to “show off” all he had collected.
Dickie married Barbara Wright in 1967 in Las Vegas, NV. They lived in various towns along the Union Pacific Railroad, settling on the family farm at Steele City while Dick continued working for the railroad and did some farming. Dickie and Barbara were married for 49 years before she passed away in 2016. She suffered many years from asthma.
Dickie continued living in the family farmhouse. He suffered from dizzy spells for several months. The neighbors would check on him every few days and in January of 2018 they found he had fallen in the house and spent several days on the floor and could not get up. He was taken to the Fairbury Hospital and then transferred to Heritage Care Center where he lived until he passed away.
He is survived by his Brother, Jerry (Judy) Greenwood of Denver, CO; Sister, LaRhee Kay (Jim) Bedlan of Lewellen, NE; Sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Jack) Buchli of Alexandria, NE, Donna (Roger) Macy of Portis, KS; many Nieces, Nephews and friends.
Cremation has taken place and services are pending. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home of Fairbury is serving the Greenwood Family. Memorials can be sent in Dickie’s name to Jefferson County Historical Society c/o Steve Block, 70490 Sorenson Ave, Steele City, NE 68440. www.gerdesmeyerfh.com
