Dorothy H. Vorderstrasse, 96, of Beatrice, NE, formerly of Fairbury, passed away on June 19, 2017 at the Beatrice Community Hospital. She was born to Henry and Ella (Dirks) Hohensee on April 1, 1921 in Pomeroy, IA. She was baptized on May 15, 1921. Her family moved to Western, NE, where she attended school at District 36 through 8th grade. She was confirmed on November 25, 1934. On November 24, 1940, she married Edward Vorderstrasse at St. John Lutheran Evangelical Church of Western. They lived in Beatrice for a short time before moving to begin farming northeast of Fairbury. Four children were born to this union, Kay, Judy, Keith and Brenda. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Plymouth where she taught Sunday school. After her husband passed away in 1964, she remained on the farm until 1975 when she moved to Beatrice. She worked part time at Loper’s Fabrics and also did professional sewing alterations. In 1977, she moved back to Fairbury where she worked at Swingster’s Jacket Factory for fifteen years, until her retirement. She continued doing sewing and alterations for many in the local community. She was presently a member of Faith Lutheran Church where for many years she helped with the men’s Easter breakfast. She was known for her wonderful baked goods, her talent for sewing, making quilts and doing crafts and needle work. She also enjoyed going to garage sales and bingo.
Survivors include one son, Keith and special friend Cookie Parde, of Barneston, NE, daughters Kay Pavlicek of Marion, KS, Judy Paben and husband James of Elkhorn, NE and Brenda Kugel and husband Dale of Beatrice, NE, nine grandchildren, Brice Goebel, Heather Mumm, Trent Paben, Justin Paben, Darren Kugel, Damen Kugel, Megan Crouse, Heidi Stringer and Brian Pavlicek, 15 great-grandchildren, sister Irene Stewart of Lincoln, brother and sister-in-law Marvin and Joyce Hohensee of Lincoln, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, infant grandson baby Goebel, and great grandson Peyton Kugel, parents Henry and Ella (Dirks) Hohensee, son-in-law Wayne Pavlicek, brothers Merlin who died at infancy, Melvin, Virgil and Dale Hohensee, Brothers and sisters-in-law Leo (Bonnie) Hohensee, Louis (Doris) Hohensee, David (Dottie) Hohensee, Wayne (Leola) Hohensee, sisters and brothers-in-law Leola (Henry) Beerenstrauch, Beulah (Alfred) Bohlmeyer, Marjorie (Alvin) Kobes, and brother-in-law Bill Stewart.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury with Pastor Ken Hart officiating. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 7:30 Thursday evening at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery, Plymouth, NE. Memorials will go to the Family’s Choice. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
