Elma Adeline Goldsberry, age 82, of Fairbury, NE formerly of Steele City, NE, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at the Jefferson Community Health Center in Fairbury. Funeral Services will be Friday, October 6, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Steele City Presbyterian Church with Gail Cross officiating. Burial will be in the Steele City Cemetery. Visitation will start on Thursday, October 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury. Memorials are preferred to the Steele City Presbyterian Church or Heritage Care Center. Pallbearers will be Tony Lytle, Jared Pape, Brian Good, Dallas Smith, Bob Seifken, Richard Bugbee, Robert Funke, and Glen Howland. Honorary Bearers will be members of American Legion Auxiliary Post 349. The soloist will be Mary Cassell.
Elma was born July 2, 1924 in Fairbury to Hugo and Bertha (Zimmerman) Weiss. She attended Fairbury High School where she was a Drum Majorette. As a child she attended Gladstone Lutheran Church where she was confirmed on July 3, 1938.
On April 25, 1942 she was united in marriage to Elton E. Goldsberry in Belleville, KS. To this union two daughters were born; Mary Kaye and Diann.
After marriage Elma and her husband settled on the family farmstead near Washington, KS. She spent the majority of her life farming, gardening, and homemaking. After retirement they made their home in Steele City, NE. She continued to enjoy her love of gardening, flowers, cooking, family, and attending Saturday night dances.
She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 349 in Steele City.
In July of 2003 after suffering a severe stroke, she became a resident of the Heritage Care Center. While there she enjoyed playing Bingo, going for van rides, and reminiscing with family and friends about surviving the Great Depression, being the wife of a World War II veteran, life on the farm, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. On September 29 she suffered a severe head injury which was the result of a fall.
She is survived by daughters; Mary Kaye and husband Jack McCarty of Washington, KS, and Diann and husband John Pape of Fairbury; Grandchildren; Stacy and husband Tony Lytle of Wilber, NE, Jared Pape, of Wichita, KS, Leca and husband Brian Good of Washington, KS, and Taunja and husband Dallas Smith of Leavenworth, KS; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elton, and a sister, Martha Day.
