Ethel Stewart Winter of Fairbury, Nebraska passed away at the age of 97 on August 29, 2014.
Ethel was born in Helvey, Nebraska on August 23, 1917 to Guy and Edith (Shaw) Stewart.
She received her elementary education at Maple Grove, District 24, graduated from Fairbury High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Doane College, and went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
Ethel taught for 50 years, beginning at Pleasant Hill, a one-room school house. She spent a few years teaching at her alma mater, Maple Grove, District 24, before finding her way to the 4th grade in Fairbury, Nebraska where she spent 38 years. After retiring from teaching in 1995, she continued to substitute in the Fairbury Schools for many years.
Ethel was an active member of the Fairbury United Methodist Church, belonged to the local Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter, and participated in several bridge clubs.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Dean Haskell; her grandchildren, Jodi McGill and husband Shawn, and Jill Thompson and husband Chris; and 4 great-grandchildren, Trevon McGill, Treyson McGill, Cody Thompson, and Kylie Thompson.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Edith Stewart, 11 brothers and sisters, and her daughter, Gayla Haskell.
Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church, Fairbury, Nebraska, on Wednesday, September 3, 1014, at 10:30 a.m. Lunch to follow graveside service at the Fairbury cemetery. Memorials will go to the local church and school organizations. Please join us to celebrate the life of Ethel Winter.
