Gary L. Junker

Gary L. Junker, age 82 of Fairbury, passed away June 25th, 2024, after spending time with his loved ones.

Gary was born December 31, 1941, in Fairbury, Nebraska, the son of Alvin Junker and Elsie (Schanze) Junker. Gary attended Fairbury High School, Fairbury Junior College, and Kearney State College to become a High School Math Teacher. In 1969, Gary was united in marriage to Beverly Hawkins, from which two sons were born, Gary (Christopher) and David. After brief positions teaching in Estes Park, CO, Clay Center, NE, and Friend, NE, Gary accepted a position at Fairbury High School where he would stay until he retired.

Anyone who met Gary knows he was a huge sports fan.  Gary played football in High School, Junior College, and at Kearney State College. He then coached high school football and many other sports throughout his career. He enjoyed attending his children’s activities and later in life, his grandchildren's activities. Gary was a proud member of the Presbyterian Church, a life-long Husker fan, and known for his gardening skills. He was intelligent, patient, and kind and knew people wherever he went.

Gary is survived by his children, Chris (Lecia) Junker of Kearney and Dave (Dusk) Junker of Kennard, sisters, Gwen Schwab of Fairbury and Clarice (Bill) Dick of Hurst, Texas, grandchildren, Allen (Natalie) Junker, Cady (Travis) Fitzgerald, Sophi Junker, Delaney Junker, Addy Junker, and Riley Junker, 2 great grandchildren, Nicholas and Theodore Fitzgerald, his wife, Karen Junker, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family. He will be greatly missed.

Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Junker, and parents.

Services will be Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Fairbury. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the First United Presbyterian Church of Fairbury or the Alzheimer’s Association.
