George C. Harms

George Charles Harms, son of William & Hattie (Fett) Harms, was born on March 13, 1923, on a farm near Gilead, NE.  On August 2, 2022, at the age of 99, George was called home to be with his Lord and Savior.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ferdinand, Harry, Edward, Paul, and Elford, his sisters Vernita, Ruth, Esther, and Marie, his grandchildren Luke Harms, Candy Flood (Sweetser), and Brady Sweetser, and his great-grandchild Caitlyn Armstrong.

He is survived by his wife Rogene Harms (Kleine) of 75 years, his children James of Lincoln, Debbie (Gorden) Sweetser of Sidney, and Jeffrey of Lincoln, his grandchildren Brandon (Lisa) Sweetser of Mobile, AL, Santana (Phil) Moreno of North Platte, Shane Harms of Lincoln, Angel Sweetser of Gardner, KS, Miranda (Jason) Beyer of Columbus, OH, Caleb Sweetser of Sidney, Jeffree Sweetser of Omaha, Michael Sweetser of Montreal, Quebec, Jasmine (John) Dunn of Sidney, Travis (Cindy) Sweetser of Lincoln, Mikala Sweetser of Sidney, Lily Harms of Lincoln, and Jacob Harms of Lincoln, his 25 great-grandchildren, and his three great-great-grandsons.

George was baptized in a church in Gladstone and confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron. Later, he became a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury.  George attended District 17 Rock School near Gilead until 8 th grade, Gilead High School for three years, and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1941.

George joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a Radarman aboard the USS Grimes during WWII.  He met Rogene, the love of his life, in December of 1946. They married in Linn, KS on May 18, 1947. In 1954, George started working for the State of Nebraska near Wahoo and was later transferred to Hebron.  He retired in 1985 and he and Rogene moved to Lincoln.

Memorial Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury on Monday, August 8, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Memorials will go to the Family's Choice. He will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery, near Gilead, NE. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. www.gerdesmeyerfh.com
