Celebration of Life for Gertrude E. Dux -

Gertrude Elizabeth Kujath Dux, age 83, died December 10, 2016, at Jefferson Community Hospital in Fairbury. She lived at Gardenside Long Term Care in Fairbury for the past three years. In July 2012, she moved to Cedarwood Assisted Living in Fairbury. Prior to that she lived on the farm near Gilead.

She was an active member in what is now called Zion Countryside Church of rural Gladstone.

She was born on June 2, 1933 on a farm south of Gladstone. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church of Gladstone, and confirmed on June 23, 1946 by Pastor W.J. Lind at St. John’s Lutheran Church Daykin. On September 19, 1954, she married Marvin Henry Conrad Dux at the American Lutheran Church in Fairbury by Pastor Clair Geibert. Four children were born to this union.

How do we begin to share the life story of this unique talented lady? Gertrude attended 1st Grade at District # 71 in Gladstone. This is where she first met her future husband Marvin. Her family moved to Daykin and lived on the Woods Brothers Ranch. She attended Daykin grade school. At the age of twelve she contracted scarlet fever and lost part of her hearing. She attended Daykin High School for one year. Her family moved to the Camp Jefferson area to farm. Her father bought a house in Fairbury where she lived with her sister Esther. Gertrude graduated from Fairbury High School in 1951, she also attended Fairbury Junior College. While going to school she worked at the Bonham Theater selling popcorn and sneaking samples to Marvin Dux who she began dating and later married. She worked at Blue Valley Care Home in Hebron for 10 years and went back to school to get her certification as a cooking assistant. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to San Antonio, Texas, with the Livestock Feeder’s Association, Mexico and throughout the mid west visiting state fairs. In 1998 she went to Germany to meet her first cousin on the Kujath side. What a thrill it was for her.

Mom had a strong and sometimes feisty personality. She believed in expressing her opinions. She had the “need to know” as she truly was a watcher of all her surroundings. Mom was detail oriented as she could remember what you wore years ago, dates, times, schedules, and etc. She had the ability to keep up to date with current events by often times watching two TV’s at a time and listening to the radio. She was the ultimate volunteer working at the blood mobile, immunization clinics, delivering mail to the hospital or nursing home patients, being part of senior diners, helping with 4-H and church and community activities to name a few.

She loved to watch and feed birds. While raising her children, she taught them the value of hard work by raising hundreds of chickens, gathering, washing eggs, and having a chicken plucking party with neighbor ladies.

She believed in being busy with her many clubs such as Women’s Fellowship, Sugar & Spice Extension Club, Friendly Thursday Club, Elk’s Card Club, Beta Sigma Si Sorority and various card clubs.
She put a lot of thought into her gift giving or expressions of love.

She supported her children and grandchildren in their numerous activities as much as possible. She loved to cook and share with others. Some of her favorites were fried chicken, chicken noodle soup, vegetable soup, fudge, pecan tarts, Christmas cookies., candy and pie making. She believed that everyone was always welcome in her house.

She often helped her 7 grand children bake cookies, muffins and etc. to exhibit at the county fair.

As her family grew and moved to various areas it was hard for her to accept at first that we couldn’t always be together for celebrations, but we always enjoyed the moments together with who was there and thought of those who couldn’t be there. This year around Thanksgiving all of her children, grand children and great grand children were here celebrating with her. She was so happy to share that moment with all of us. What a memory we have with mom, grandma and great grandma. Family…Life’s Greatest Blessing…. She will truly be missed!
