Harold J.E. Meyer, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the age of 95.
Harold was born October 24, 1919 in Cadams, Nebraska. He spent his first 14 years on his family’s farm.
Harold graduated from Superior High School in 1936. He started his retail career in 1937 at Hested’s which merged with the J.J. Newberry Co., in 1960. Harold’s career took him to Denver, Omaha, Los Angeles, and New York City as he advanced from various positions to Executive Vice President of Operations nationwide. He moved to Blue Springs in 1974 working for Wal-Mart and TG&Y until his retirement in 1983. After his retirement, he held many part time jobs and served as President of the Sherwood Village Homes Association in Blue Springs.
Harold fully retired in 1999 at age 80 when he moved to the Fountains at Greenbriar, a retirement Community in Independence, Missouri. He enjoyed many years there, including bridge, numerous committee assignments, his pets, and visitors whom he would tell countless stories of his life. Harold’s last years were spent happily at Wilshire at Lakewood.
Harold enlisted in the Navy in August, 1942, and served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp, as a dive bomber pilot stationed on the USS Bennington, a carrier in the Pacific Theatre. He flew 7 combat missions over Japan and flew over the Battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife Garnet of 58 years, eldest son Ross, and Sisters Hattie, Marie, and Ella.
He is survived by son Thomas Meyer and Leslie Williams of Round Rock, Texas; son John Meyer and wife Sharla of Blue Springs; daughter Mary Meyer-Scully and husband David of Nederland, Colorado; grandchildren- Rod Paddock, Erin and Emmit Scully, Jonathan and Katelyn Meyer; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, mostly living in Nebraska. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Blue Springs.
Memorial service, including full military honors for Harold will be held October 26, 2015 at 10AM at the Fairbury Cemetery in Fairbury, NE.
