Harold Wilbur Vinkenberg, son of William and Freda Splittgerber Vinkenberg was born on a farm east of Hebron on March 29, 1919 and passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2006 of cancer at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 4 days.
When Harold was small, his mother took him to Sunday School at a Brethran County Church. Although Harold never joined a church, he liked to listen to the Grace Lutheran Church radio broadcast from Fairbury and also to Billy Graham and The Hour Of Power.
Harold went through the 8th grade to a couple of country schools then attended high school in Gilead two years and two years at Hebron High School graduating in 1937. He went to a business school in Grand Island for one year. He quit college to come home to farm when his father passed away. He continued to farm until he retired in 1982.
Harold married Guila Bauer at Mount Calvary Church in Marysville, Kansas on February 12, 1944 by the Rev. Paul J. Rieth. They enjoyed over 62 years of life together.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Bernard and Herbert.
He is survived by his wife Guila of Hebron, Nebraska, two nephews, Lynn and wife Jeannine Vinkenberg and James Vinkenberg, niece Sharon Hickes and husband Tom, two great nieces and one great nephew. Also surviving are two great great nephews and one great great niece, one brother-in-law Melvin Bauer and wife Laura, three sisters-in-law, Pauline Bauer, Donna Ward and husband Bob, and Barbara Jones, several nieces-in-law and nephews-in-law plus many other relatives and friends.
Services will be on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. at the Gerdes-Meyer Chapel in Fairbury with Pastor Charles Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Fairbury Cemetery and memorials are to the Grace Lutheran Radio Broadcast. Pallbearers will be Walter Coordsen, Brad Coordsen, Gene Bauer, LaVern Bauer, Duane Bauer and Lyle Olson.
