Helen L Green

April 30, 1921 — March 7, 2016

Helen L. Green, Fairbury, was born on April 30, 1921 to Laurence C and Blanche C (Roulsten) Green at the family home of 723 B Street, Fairbury. She passed away on March 7, 2016 at Heritage Care Center at the age of 94.

Because of increasing blindness and decreasing hearing, she had moved from her apartment to the nursing home at the age of 90. She continued to have an active life there, attending most activities. She enjoyed eating and singing with her friends, especially Richard Meyer and Paul Davidson.

Helen was a life-long member of First Christian Church, baptized March 3, 1930. She joined Fairbury Troop #5 of Prairie Rose Girl Scouts, the first troop in Fairbury, where her mother was a leader. She graduated from Fairbury High School with the class of 1938, and attended Fairbury Junior College and Wayne State College. She also traveled to summer school in several foreign countries. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and enjoyed going to plays in Beatrice and concerts in Fairbury. She was active in the county Democratic committee. She promoted Rock Creek Station, taking visitors there often. Helen was an avid reader, enjoying books on tape when she could no longer see to read.

She retired from Fairbury Journal-News in 1983 after working there for 44 years. She started out as a personal secretary to W. F. Cramb, Bill Nuckoll’s grandfather. She continued her career as a journalist, researching stories of public interest and receiving many awards for her columns. She was a past president of the Nebraska Press Women.

She traveled to interesting places in the world, including Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. She became somewhat of an expert on Mayan culture after visiting the Yucatan and Guatemala in 1955. Her slide shows were popular, shown to many groups in Fairbury. Other favorite spots to visit were in Oklahoma to see relatives and in Colorado where her sister and niece lived. She did research on genealogy and wrote down many historical accounts of family connections and stories.

She is survived by her nieces, Carol (Larry) Page of Glen Ellen CA, and June (Robert) Ray of Littleton CO, her grandnephews, Bradley Page and Ian (Laura) Ray, grandniece Heather Alter (David Mackey), great grandniece Kate Alter and great grandnephew, Owen Ray.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Ruth Green Kubick, and by her great grandnephew, Mason Ray.
