Joseph Roy Hergott, son of Roy and Ruth (Glaum Hergott was born October 4, 1947 in a Fairbury hospital. He died February 11, 2014 in Fairbury, NE.
Joe was baptized by the Rev. Franklin King and later confirmed in the Alexandria Presbyterian Church. His membership was transferred to the Fairbury Presbyterian Church in 1971.
He attended the Gladstone Public School and worked on the family farm until they moved to Fairbury in 1971.
Joe worked as custodian at the Christian Church for three years and then was employed by the county as assistant custodian at the courthouse. He retired from there April 2, 2009, after 35 years of dedicated service. He had an overnight retirement as the next morning he began part-time janitor work at Parkview Manor for a brief time. August 1986 he was awarded the Employee of the Month by Jefferson County Courthouse. June 13, 1997, he was awarded Employee of the Week in recognition of outstanding service by the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce. October 2003, he was first recipient to receive Parkview Manor’s Heart of Gold Award for lending a helping hand to others. His motto in life was “Keep Moving.” No matter what he had to face, he never gave up. He was true to this in all his life. He enjoyed collecting Farmall items, collie, M&M’s and Cornhusker figurines.
In his last 6 years of life, he enjoyed spending time visiting and going places with his special friend, Peggy Sweetser of Fairbury. They have had beautiful memories.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ruth and Roy Hergott; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hergott, and Mr. and Mrs. George Glaum.
Survivors include his special friend, Peggy Sweetser, several cousins and many friends.
Services will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Fairbury with Pastor Steve Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Fairbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Fairbury Presbyterian Church or VFW. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of the arrangements.
