Joyce Winkle

Joyce Winkle 94 of Odell, NE departed this life on December 31, 2017 at Heritage Care Center, Fairbury, NE.  She was born January 18, 1923 at Superior (Nuckolls County), NE.  Her parents were Ted and Elizabeth (Zajicek) Newburn.

Ray Winkle and Joyce Newburn were married on Dec. 6, 1941 at Clay Center, KS.  They were blessed with over 66 years together, three daughters - Joanne, Linda and Jeannine, seven grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  Her family became the most important part of her life.

Joyce graduated from Beatrice High School in 1940 as valedictorian of the class of 185 graduates with a Regents scholarship.  Joyce worked as a legal secretary and bookkeeper, retiring from Odell Farmers Co-op in 1984.  They started farming near Beatrice, NE., then to a farm near Odell, NE.  Ray and Joyce enjoyed collecting antiques, auction sales, flea markets, gardening and flowers.  Joyce was very much interested in researching genealogy.

Joyce was baptized in the First Christian Church of Beatrice, NE.   Her membership was transferred to the Odell Christian Church and then to the Church of Christ in Wymore, NE.  In 2010 Joyce joined Our Savior Lutheran Church, Odell, NE.

Surviving are three daughters and their spouses:  Joanne and Larry Genrich of Odell, NE, Linda and Bill Scheele of Diller, NE, Jeannine and Don Weiner of Colby, KS.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren and their spouses:  Jeff and Lisa Lisec of Grain Valley, MO; William D. and Joy Scheele of Odell, NE; Tim and Jill Scheele of Odell, NE; Mary Jo and Doug Bures of Odell, NE; Daniel and Nancy Weiner of Sterling KS; Kathy Satomi of Hays, KS; and Edward and Ellen Weiner of Hoxie, KS.   Surviving also is her  brother, Ted Newburn and wife Jan of Roseville, CA.

Joyce was preceded in death by husband Ray (June 14, 2009), her parents Ted and Elizabeth Newburn and her sister and brother-in-law Irene and Earl Burger.

The funeral will be held January 5, 2018 at 10:30 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Odell, NE with Pastor Greg Stuckwisch officiating.  Viewing will be at Gerdes-Meyer Chapel in Fairbury.  Family will meet visitors on Thursday, Jan. 4 from 5-7 PM.  Interment will be at the Odell Cemetery.  Memorials will be to the church.  Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home of Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
