Judy Marie Weers

March 16, 1947 — April 19, 2024

Judy Marie Weers was born in Omaha to Fritz and Erma (Janssen) Gunther on March 16, 1947.

She was baptized shortly thereafter into God's family.  Judy confessed her baptismal faith in the rite of Confirmation in 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church, Harbine, Nebraska.

As a youth, she attended District 97, Harbine School, and Zion Parochial School.  In the fall of 1961, Judy attended Diller High School in Diller, Nebraska.  During her time in high school, Judy worked for the Diller Telephone Office. She graduated valedictorian of her class in May of 1965.

After high school, Judy attended Fairbury Junior College in Fairbury, Nebraska, and worked in the Superintendent's Office at Fairbury Public Schools during the same time. She graduated from Fairbury Junior College in 1967.

Judy then went on to Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska, and worked in the administration office during her time there. She graduated from Kearney State College in 1969 with a B.A. in Education majoring in history.

For the next five years, Judy worked as a high school history teacher in Wilcox, Nebraska earning teacher of the year during her time there.

During this time she met Richard Lee Weers.

Judy and Richard were joined together in Holy Matrimony on August 16, 1975, at Zion Lutheran Church, Harbine Nebraska. Four and a half years later they adopted and brought into their lives two boys, Shawn Christopher, age 5, and Steven Lee Weers, age 4.

She worked at Rock Creek Station near Fairbury, NE for 25 years. She worked in the visitor's center and gave people tours of the park. She was very knowledgeable about the park and told people about its history.

On April 19, 2024, at the age of 77, Judy was called home to our Lord Jesus Christ while at her home in Diller, Nebraska.

She is survived by her two sons, Shawn Weers of Diller, and Steve Weers of Lincoln.  She has five grandchildren - Marquis Weers and fiancée Kijhiera Dismuke of Omaha, Spencer Weers of Diller, Michael Weers, Vanessa Weers, and Rose Weers all of Lincoln. Judy is survived by her sister Susan Bauer and her husband Bob of Fairbury, Nancy Etmund and her husband Larry of Martel, Henry (Butch) Gunther and his wife Janice of Harbine, her sisters-in-law Carrol Benzel of Biloxi, MS, and Shirley Lewis of Omaha, her brother-in-law Darrel Weers and his wife Nancy of Lincoln, as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband Richard, daughter-in-law Melissa Weers, her grandson Isaiah Weers, and her parents Fritz and Erma Gunther.

Family was important to Judy. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, her sons, her sisters and brother, and their families. She would proudly talk about the things her children and grandchildren were doing to her friends and relatives.  She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and computer games, playing her dulcimer, and playing cards with friends.

She was a long-time member of Merry Moderns Club, LWML, and a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Judy loved her Lord Jesus with her whole heart, and would often pray for others. In this time of sadness, we remember the joy and love she shared with us all.

May God bless and keep you all.
