1930 – 2025

Kathleen Rose Selig (Cortney) of Alexandria, NE, was born on October 30, 1930. She passed away on May 20, 2025 at the age of 94, at the Cedarwood Assisted Living facility in Fairbury, NE.

Kathleen grew up on farms in the Alexandria area and was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She attended Alexandria Public School and graduated from high school in 1948. Following her graduation, Kathleen worked as a teacher in a country school southwest of Alexandria, where she rode a horse to and from school each day. On August 13, 1949, she married Kenneth L. Selig, who served as the rural mail carrier for Alexandria. Kathleen and Kenneth lived in Alexandria throughout their married life. In addition to her teaching career, Kathleen was the editor of the Alexandria Argus newspaper for nine years, from 1959 to 1968. She also served as an EMT with the fire department for many years.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; her parents, William and Sabina Cortney (Costelloe); her brothers, James, Thomas, Bernard, William, Dennis Jerome, and John; her sisters, Mary Cortney, Ruth Disney, and Ann Domling; as well as her daughter-in-law Patricia Selig and son-in-law Phillip South.

She is survived by her six children: Robert Selig and wife Kathy, Richard Selig and wife Charlene, David Joe Selig, Edward Selig and wife Jodi, all residing in Lincoln, NE; Nancy South of Wahoo, NE; and Thomas Selig and wife Cindy of Omaha. Additionally, Kathleen was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass for Kathleen will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fairbury, NE. Visitation will take place the Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home, Fairbury, NE, on Tuesday, May 27th, starting at 5:00 PM, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 PM. Memorials may be designated to St. Michael Catholic Church, Fairbury, NE or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, NE.
