Larry E. Mahaffey

Larry Ernest Mahaffey, 83, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021. He was born November 7, 1937 to Ernest & Gladys (Powell) Mahaffey on the farm at rural Alexandria, NE. He was the third of five children, having 2 older sisters and 2 younger sisters. Due to his fathers' health, Larry took over duties of the family farm at a very young age and was a lifetime farmer.

He was baptized at the Alexandria Presbyterian church and was a member of the Presbyterian church in Fairbury. He served as an Elder in several board positions of the Alexandria Presbyterian church and also served in many board positions at the Methodist church in Fairbury while a member there. Larry was a member and Past Master of the Fairbury Masonic Lodge #35 AF& AM, York Rite Masons, Sesostris Shrine Lincoln, NE, the Sesostris Little Cars and Road Runner units and the Pioneer Shrine Club. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT for many years and served as chairman of the Alexandria Rural Fire Board. He served on the county Extension board and was a 4-H leader for many years.

Larry enjoyed fishing as a boy and later enjoyed hunting, traveling and cherished working at the Shrine circus and other events and driving his Little car in parades. He loved to go dancing whenever he could. He enjoyed the many years of working together on the farm with his son, always trying to improve the farm and make it better.

Larry leaves to mourn Son James & wife Tracy, Sisters Linda Ebbers and Lu Korber & husband David, special friend Beverly Kliment, many nieces and nephews and other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lois Ream and Luree Marschman, bothers in-law Daryl Ream & Dale Ebbers.

Services will be Monday, May 3, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Fairbury.  The family will greet friends on Sunday from 4 – 6 at the funeral home.  Memorials have been established to Sesostris Shrine, Fairbury Masonic Lodge & the Presbyterian Church.  Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
