Lloyd Dwayne Scarrow was born in Mankato, Kansas on June 9, 1938, to Verne and Ruby Hamilton Scarrow. Lloyd attended school in Mankato where he enjoyed athletics and the marching band. He excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track and upon graduation in 1956, received a football scholarship to Fairbury Junior College.
Lloyd attended Fairbury Junior College, playing football for two years for coach Red Grovert. In his second season, he received the Outstanding National Junior College Football Player Award as a fullback in the National Junior College Championship game. Following his two years at Fairbury Junior College, the University of Nebraska awarded Lloyd a football scholarship where he played for the Cornhuskers. Lloyd stayed connected with a number of players from Fairbury Junior College and the University of Nebraska after his playing days concluded.
Lloyd graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Peru State College and a Masters degree in Secondary Education and Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1960, he began teaching science and physical education for Fairbury Public Schools. After four years of teaching, he became the first guidance counselor for Fairbury High School which he continued to do until his retirement in 2003. During those years he spent countless hours doing what he loved - listening to students and encouraging them to become all they could be.
During his career at Fairbury, Lloyd coached high school football for twenty years and basketball for five years. Some of his fondest coaching memories came from the forty years he spent coaching the Fairbury High School boys track team. He felt particular joy in helping his athletes improve and used those experiences to demonstrate what they were capable of when their track days were over.
Throughout his life, Lloyd loved sports. He was an avid golfer for nearly his entire adult life and refereed basketball and football games until his own children began playing in high school.
Outside of his teaching and coaching career, Lloyd took pleasure in the trees, flowers, and gardens of his backyard. His vegetables kept neighbors and friends happy for many years. He was always looking for a better seed to plant and happily froze or canned the produce from his yearly harvest.
4-H was also important to him. He enjoyed caring for his family’s cattle and getting them ready for the county and state fairs. The way he cared for the livestock revealed a kindness and gentleness that embodied his personality.
Lloyd was a member of the Fairbury Presbyterian Church for 59 years and served as treasurer as well as a deacon and numerous committees. He was the custodian of the Presybterian Church for 36 years. He took great pride in clean windows, floors and pews.
He was a Fairbury Rotary member for 37 years and was also on the 1923 Fairbury Schools Foundation Board Member for 11 years, serving as President 8 of those years. He formed and wrote the criteria for the Foundation’s scholarship program and was proud to help make the program a success.
Lloyd liked travelling with his family. He was especially fond of trips to Africa, Ireland, India, Singapore and England where he always seemed to bond with people and find things they shared in common.
Above all, Lloyd valued his family, his two children, their spouses, and his five grandchildren. He cherished being a part of their lives. He found joy in big and small things. He appreciated what was, was content in the moment, and had hope for tomorrow.
Lloyd married Sharon Junker June 18, 1960. Two children were born, Alan and Jane.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Sharon, son Alan and wife Meera of Springfield, Missouri, daughter Jane and husband Wes of Hickman, Nebraska; grandchildren Evelyn, William and Harrison Scarrow; and Thomas and Marcus Hansmeyer; brothers Donald and Von. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marjorie and brother Lynn.
