Lyle J. Schmit

Lyle J. Schmit, oldest child of Harry and Wauneta (Collicot) Schmit died July 10, 2021 at the age of 83 at Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, NE.
He was born Jan. 29, 1938 in Hebron, NE. He did all his schooling there and was baptized into the Catholic Church.
He joined the Marines in 1956 to 1958 in California. He delivered the paper and mowed the city park growing up. He did odd jobs and worked in Lincoln, NE when he got home from the service. In 1961 he started with L.T. & T. in Hebron, NE.
He married Barbara (Baloun) on September 9, 1961 and 3 children were born to them. They lived in Hebron and Hastings, NE. Came to Fairbury in December of 1966.
Lyle retired from the phone company in 1997 after 36 years. He and Barbara enjoyed 50 years of camping and 16 years of going south.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of 59 years and 3 sons, Lenny (Kathy) Schmit of Fairbury, Bradley (Diane) Schmit of Olathe, Ks, Ricky (significant other Brandi Lines) Schmit of Fairbury, 7 grandchildren, sister Linda Moore of Opelika, Alabama, brother-in-law Darrel Welch of Gohner, NE, one sister and brother-in-law Adella and Charles Thompson of Belleville, KS, and more family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, 1 brother, 1 sister, 3 nephews, 1 great-nephew, and 1 brother-in-law.
A Rosary and memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Chapel in Fairbury. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Hebron, NE. Cremation has taken place. Memorials have been designated to the family’s choice. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
