Marion E. Stewart, 89, of Fairbury passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on November 18, 2014. He was born May 29, 1925 to William and Breta (Holbrook) Stewart in Washington, Kansas. In 1935 the family moved to Endicott, Nebraska. Marion graduated from Fairbury High School in 1943 and went to work at the Alexandria State Bank in Alexandria, Nebraska. He returned to school at Fairbury Junior College in 1953, graduating in the fall of 1954. Marion was united in marriage to Natalie Schoenfeld on June 10, 1956 and they had one daughter, Michelle.
Marion farmed with his father and worked for the Rock Island Railroad before purchasing the Abstract and Title Guaranty, Company in Fairbury. He and Natalie owned and operated this business for 45 years. Marion was also a loan agent for Tecumseh Building and Loan during this time. Marion served in the Fairbury National Guard as First Sergeant for 11 years. He also served on the Fairbury City Council for 5 years and the Fairbury Power Board for 34 years. He was presented the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1999 by then Governor Johanns. Marion was a member of the Fairbury Elks Lodge and the Masonic Temple.
Marion’s great love was music and playing saxophone. During high school he started the band, The Swing Kids, played 11 years with the Mickey Kull Orchestra and then owned and played with The Bobby Douglas Band for 2 years. 50 years after disbanding, the Mickey Kull Orchestra reunited every Memorial Day weekend from 2007-2011.
Marion is survived by his loving wife, Natalie, of Fairbury; his daughter, Michelle, of Lincoln; numerous relatives and friends; and dog companions, Sugar and Lola Sue. Marion was completely devoted to family and friends and loved to laugh. He was a hard worker, loyal, practical and believed the common sense way was the best way.
Memorial services at 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 22, at the United Methodist Church, 605 E Street, Fairbury, Nebraska. Interment at a later date. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research or the ALS Foundation in care of Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home.
Memorial Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday November 22, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Fairbury, with Pastor Fay Hubbard officiating. Cremation has taken place, no viewing. A register book is available at the funeral home to sign. In Lieu of flowers Memorials to ALS Research or MAYO Clinic Cancer Research. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
