Marvel Elizabeth Dimond Winter

February 9, 1919 — March 4, 2015

Marvel Elizabeth Dimond Winter, 96 of Western, NE, entered the kingdom of heaven and the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. She was born on February 9, 1919 in rural Alton, Kansas to Royal and Chloe (Wolford) Dimond.

She graduated from Alton High School in 1936 & attended Kansas State in Manhattan, KS. Marvel began teaching in August, 1937 in rural Alton, KS. at the Dimond Country School. She also taught at the Lawrence Creek & Alton Country Schools until May, 1942.

She moved to Whittier, CA. obtaining employment during World War II & volunteered in the USO on the West Coast. She was renting an upstairs room of a private residence in Whittier in the mid-1940's when her landlord introduced her to the tenant renting the basement apartment. This tenant was Rolland F. Winter whom she married on February 9, 1946 at the Wee Kirk O' The Heather Chapel in Glendale, CA. & was blessed with 40 wonderful years of marriage.

Marvel & Rolland were blessed with & by four loving & wonderful children. She leaves them behind knowing of their bond & closeness forged over the past 68 years. Marvel's first child & daughter, Karen Dianne Winter Michels, was born in Whittier, CA. on November 12, 1946. Marvel, Rolland & Karen moved to Rolland's childhood home of Western, NE. shortly after Karen's birth in 1947. Their second child & another daughter, Pamela Kay Winter Nickel, was born on March 4, 1950 in Lincoln, NE. Marvel & Rolland gave birth to their third child & son, Michael Rory Winter, on January 4, 1957. Their fourth child & second son, Jeffrey Lynn Winter, was born on November 17, 1960 in Fairbury, NE.

Marvel is fondly remembered as a warm, loving & faithful wife, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother. She was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, playing bridge, playing the piano, playing endless games of cards & spending an amazing amount of time with her family especially around the Winter card playing table. She never turned down an opportunity to play a game of cards & played she did in literally thousands of hours of cards. Every family member recalls numerous memories & stories of her card playing skills & prowess. She especially enjoyed setting people very much, which her daughter, Karen remembers very well!

Marvel & Rolland also played hundreds of weekend cards games with life-long & close friends Kathryn & Chuck Molczyk, Janile & Vernon Roesler & Glenda & David Sims.

Marvel was a Christian who accepted & believed in Jesus as her Savior. She was a member of & attended the First Baptist Church of Western, NE. She was the church pianist & will long be remembered for the hundreds of hymns played over the years. She was still playing as recently as 2012 at the age of 93.

She taught Head Start in Exeter, NE. for years where she formed life-long friendships with Bethine Lief, Martha Marget, Alice Steyer, Elaine Krecji, Maddie Krecji, & Frances Prachael. She then began working at Blue Valley Community Action in Fairbury, NE. until her retirement. She picked up & enjoyed bowling later in life & continued well into her 80's.

She entered heaven leaving her four children and their spousees. They are daughter Karen Michels and her husband Stan of York, Nebraska, daughter Pamela and her husband Butch Nickel of Western, Nebraska, son Michael Winter and his wife Lourdes of Oceanside, CA, and son Jeffrey Winter and his wife Lisa of Yorba Linda, CA. Also surviving stepson Rolland Scott Winter of VA.

She is also survived by and was blessed with seven grandchildren. They are grandson Scott Michels and his wife Susie of Omaha, NE, granddaughter Christina Michels Eastman and her husband Scott of Omaha, NE, grandson John Nickel and his wife Mindy of Rapid City, SD, grandson Justin Nickel and his wife Nicole of DeWitt, NE, granddaughter Joelle Nickel Nelson and her husband Anders of Lincoln, NE and Drew Winter attending Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA, and Mason Winter of Yorba Linda, CA, 2 step grandchildren, Rolland Scott of CO, and Cynthia Winter of VA.

She was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren. They are Austin Nickel, Johnathan Nickel, Jakob Nickel, Trevor Nickel, Emilee Nickel, Hailey Michels, Jared Eastman, Ashley Michels, Tristin Nickel and Troy Eastman and three step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband Rolland F. Winter (December 27, 1986) and her parents Royal (1975) and Chloe (1985) Dimond.

She was also preceded in death by Mary F. Nichols of Whittier, CA in September, 2014. Mary was Marvel's first cousin and life-long best friend. The two formed a tight and close bond equivalent to that of sisters. They spoke to each other on the phone on an almost daily basis and saw each other whenever time, distance and their health enabled them. Their children have become incredibly close as a result of their tight relationship over the years.

Marvel's family is deeply appreciative and grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support in the many heart-felt and sincere forms from too many to name. We also wish to express our sincere thankfulness for those who loved, cared for and watched over Marvel at Cedarwood in Fairbury, NE and Hearthstone in York, NE.

A memorial and celebration of her life and eternal life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Fairbury, NE on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will follow immediately at the Plainview Cemetery in Western, NE with a reception following at the home of Pamela and Butch Nickel in Western, NE.
