Marvin Gail Kerwood passed away on November 4, 2012 at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 17 days at Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, Nebraska. He was born March 17, 1931 at Alexandria, NE. He was the second child of Donald and Ruth (DeFrain) Kerwood. He was baptized April 16, 1933 at the Alexandria Presbyterian Church. He joined the church Jan. 4, 1948. Marvin was active in the church serving as an elder and deacon.
He attended rural school districts in the Alexandria area and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1948. He was married to Mildred Zweifel March 9, 1957 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Fairbury. They made their home on a farm north of Alexandria. To this union was born four children Debra, Dianne, Doyle and Dawn. He was in a farming partnership with his father and brother, Raymond. Marvin and Mildred retired in 2005 and moved to Fairbury.
Marvin served in the United States Marine Corps from March 28, 1952 – March 27, 1954. He spent 11 weeks at Camp Pendelton, California. In September 1952 he was sent to Korea where he served in the Infantry until December 1953.
Marvin was a member of the Thayer County Feeders Association and the Alexandria Community Club. He was a member of the Alexandria Rural Fire Department for 36 years. He was a member of Alexandria American Legion Post 194, VFW Post 3113 in Fairbury and a 60 year member of the Masonic Hebron Lodge #43.
Marvin lived his whole life in Nebraska and was blessed with the richness of farm life. On the family farm he assisted with the planting and harvesting of many crops. He had a passion for taking care of cattle and shared this gift with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fan following several Husker teams. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their many activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law Paul and Grace Zweifel. He is survived by his wife; children Deb (Mike) Holes of Fairbury, Dianne (Don) Simpson of Lincoln, Doyle (Joann) Kerwood of Fairbury and Dawn (Dennis) Buckles of Deshler; grandchildren Jessica (Jimmy) Polmanteer, Amanda (Brian) Snook, Justin Holes, Dustin Simpson and fiancé Robin Latham, Danielle Simpson, Johnathan and Elizabeth Kerwood, and Danica, Danessa and Drew Buckles; great grandsons Daxton, Jace and Wesley Snook; brothers Raymond (Belva) Kerwood and Kenneth (Jeanne) Kerwood; brother-in-law Delbert (Marilyn) Zweifel, sisters-in-law Marge (Jim) Simpson and Jan (Mike) Slater and many other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, NE with Lana Likens officiating. Burial will be in the Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are to Presbyterian Church or Alexandria Fire Dept. The family will greet friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:30
