He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and was confirmed by Pastor Avery Degner on May 30, 1948.

Marvin graduated from Plymouth High School in 1952 and was drafted into the U. S. Army. Before being deployed to Germany he proposed to his future wife, Norma Jean with plans to be married after his discharge. He was stationed at Germany and served in the Field Artillary as a Cannonear & driver on a 155 Howitzer & also served as a German Interpreter. He was discharged from the military in 1954 as a PFC with several medals including the Good Conduct Medal.

After the Army, he helped his father on the home farm and rented several other acres for his own. September 26, 1954 he married Norma Jean Hiner at the Endicott ME Church. He spent the later years after retiring from farming, working at Traum-Vance-Gerdes & Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Homes – until his health began to fail. He also spent a couple of years being a Greeter at Walmart which allowed him to meet and visit with many people, which he enjoyed.

His family was so special – he enjoyed his children’s activities and later the grand-children and then the great-grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and trips to new places. He loved his church, serving the Lord singing in the choir and serving on the Church Board and Aid Association for Lutherans.
