In Loving Memory of Melvin Martin Brueggemann
Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through His servant, Melvin.
Melvin Martin Brueggemann, son of Martin and Clara (Bartels) Brueggemann, was born near Tobias on May 13, 1927.
He was baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit on May 22, 1927 at Zion Lutheran Church of Tobias by the Rev. E.O. Potratz.
Melvin confessed his baptismal faith in the rite of Confirmation on March 17, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Church of Tobias. He was instructed by the Rev. William Nau. His confirmation verse was Psalm 37:6. He was admitted to the altar to receive the medicine of immortality, Christ’s life-giving body and blood.
Melvin was joined together in holy matrimony to Anna Houser on August 25, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Daykin by the Rev. O. R. Heinitz. God raised through this union five children, James, Jerry, Gene, Janette, and Jan.
On December 29, 2013, at the age of 86 years, Melvin fell asleep in Jesus at his home in Fairbury.
He is survived by his wife, Anna of Fairbury; four sons, James and wife Kathy of Beatrice, Jerry and wife Carlene of Beatrice, Gene and wife Marilyn of Clatonia, and Jan and wife Isabel of Irvine, California; one daughter, Janette Bartels and husband Scott of Western; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Melvin is predeceased by his brother Vernon and wife Laura; sisters Arline Schwisow and husband Milo and Dolores Henke and husband Arley; sister-in law Marilyn Krupicka; and brothers-in-law Wayne Houser and William G. Houser, Jr.

The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our brother, Melvin.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church –Daykin, NE., with Pastor Paul Beyer officiating. Burial at the Plainview Cemetery – Western, NE. Visitation will be at the Meyer Funeral Home in Western on Tuesday Dec. 31 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. & at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury on Wednesday January 1 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., with family greeting Friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury
