Michael was born on October 2, 1949, in Fairbury, Nebraska, to Floyd and Meada Newman. He grew up in the Fairbury and Endicott areas, where he developed deep roots in the community that would remain an important part of his life.
Following his graduation from Fairbury High School, Michael proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 30, 1968. During the Vietnam War, he served with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal before concluding his Marine Corps service on November 16, 1970. His military service was an important chapter in his life and a source of pride.

After returning home to Nebraska, Michael continued the family's farming tradition, working on the family farm south of Fairbury. He later worked as a custodian at Fairbury Junior-Senior High School, continuing his lifelong connection to the community where he had grown up.
In July 1971, Michael married Marion "Cynthia" Newman. Together, they raised their two sons, Michael and Robert.
Outside of work, Michael had a variety of interests that brought him enjoyment throughout his life. He was an enthusiastic collector of toy tractors, reflecting his connection to farming and agricultural history. He also enjoyed learning about historical naval ships, spending time reading about their design, history, and the stories behind them.
Michael had a love of science fiction and television, enjoying the imaginative stories and adventures they offered. He also appreciated a good meal and the simple pleasures of everyday life.
Above all, Michael's life was centered around his family and the community he called home. His military service, work on the family farm, and time at the local high school were all part of a life deeply connected to Fairbury.
