Robert M. Brown passed away May 20, 2015 at Jefferson County Health Care. He was born in Western, July 14, 1933 to Murray and Eva (Wanek) Brown. The village was his home (and favorite place) his entire life except for serving his country (4 years in the Air Force) and after retiring, working for his son-in-law in Colorado Springs for 5 years.
He married Janet Ross, December 22, 1953. They shared service life in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They had three children: Robert Jr, Sheri and Jeffrey. After returning to Western he joined his father in the grocery business. When his father passed away in 1958, he purchased the business and ran it for 42 years. His theory was, "If you loved the job, it wasn't work," and he did enjoy the store and all the friends he made over the years.
He was also one of the first coaches that started Little League Baseball in Western. They played 1/2 mile north of town. (Village ordinances-No games played on Sundays) The pasture was dragged and marked before each game with all the boys helping! "Great Times!" Bob always had fun playing on the Western men's softball team. He appreciated the patience his teammates had as he made his way around the bases!
Nebraska Football was another passion. (Ticket holders since 1963) There was nothing like the atmosphere of those exciting years and all the great crowds after the games at the Ole Legion Club in Lincoln.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Janet (they enjoyed almost 62 years together), Bob and wife Mari; Sheri and husband Ted George; Jeff and wife Kay. Grandchildren: Matt and Emily Brown, Amber Brown and friend Reva, Autumn and future husband Jeff; Amanda and Joe Donnelly, Ted and Melissa George, Alicia and Skyler Biek, Amy George, Audrey and Matt Pound, Tom George and Michelle Bales.
Great grandchildren: Emerson Brown-Rebuck, Ambrose, Rohan and Emmett Donnelly, Maggie, Mary and Maureen George, Cooper Wolfe and Creighton Bales. Also survived by sister, Nancy and husband Harold Knobel, sister-in-laws; Shirley (Ross) Wiemers, Marjorie (Ross) Mammen and Joyce (Ross) and husband Marvin Hohensee.
Preceded in death by father and mother Murray and Eva Brown; in-laws Duane Wiemers, Don Mammen, Rosalie (Ross) and Dale DeyErmand , Bonnie (Ross) and Leo Hohensee.
Cremation has taken place. No services per his wishes.
