Roger Wayne Stephens

June 25, 1952 — March 27, 2023

Roger was born in Odell, Nebraska on June 25, 1952, to Wayne and Mildred Stephens. He was confirmed in the Diller United Methodist Church and graduated from Diller High School in 1970. He lived most of his life on the family farm south of Diller, moving to Fairbury in recent years due to health issues.

Roger enjoyed the farm life. As a young man he worked as a hired hand for Loren Dvorak. In later years, he worked in town, but always worked the family ground and raised cattle. He enjoyed tractors, both large and small. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors, but also using the big equipment on the farm. He enjoyed attending cattle and bull sales.

Roger was not enamored with school; however, he enjoyed playing the Tuba and participated in state competitions and solo performances. Other highlights of his life included attending the Cotton Bowl in the 1970’s, camping and fishing with friends, and traveling with the family to Colorado for family functions. In the community, Roger enjoyed the annual Diller Picnic and served as the parade Captain for many years.

There were many health challenges in Roger’s life. But he was not a complainer. He took them in stride, taking an “It is what it is” attitude.

He is preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Mildred (Cacek) Stephens Kotas, and Brother-in-law Tom Busboom. He is survived by sister Pam Busboom of Crete, Nebraska, brother Randy (Carol) Stephens of Thorton, Colorado and Mike (Ruth) Stephens of Beatrice, Nebraska, Aunt Marilyn Wrigley of Fairbury and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30 at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral home from 6-8pm. The family will greet family and friends. Services will be held on March 31 at 10:30am at the funeral home.
