Ruby E. Smith

Ruby Ellen Wever was born on November 15, 1932 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.  She was the oldest of three children of Ralph A Wever and Ella Mae (Jeffery) Wever.  As the eldest, she helped care for both her brothers, especially when Junior (Ralph Wever Jr.) was ill. Ruby attended school in Plattsmouth and graduated in 1950.  Soon after graduation, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska looking for job opportunities and independence.  She worked at Back to the Bible Broadcast from 1952 until 1983.  She was a member of Better Homes Extension Club and Temple Baptist Church of Lincoln.  On April 23, 1983 Ruby was married to Orland D Smith at Temple Baptist Church.  Together they lived on Orland’s family farm near Western, Nebraska and later in Fairbury Nebraska.  In 2000, Ruby moved to The Walter apartments in Lincoln, NE.  While living there, she spent a lot of her time helping her neighbors by driving them to doctors appointments or taking them grocery shopping.  For many years she was the person who responded if there was an emergency after the manager had left for the day.  Ruby was a person who was always ready to help others in any way she could.

Ruby is survived by her brother and sister in-law, William and Norma (Meyers) Wever; by her niece, Saundra Wever Frerichs; two nephews Mike Wever and Ron Wever all of Lincoln.; and five grandnieces, five grandnephews, and two great-grandnieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Ella Mae; her brother Junior; her husband Orland, and her nephew Donald Wever.

On September 14, 2020, Ruby will be laid to rest beside Orland at Plainview Cemetery in Western, Nebraska. Memorials have been established to Temple Baptist Church 4940 Randolph Street, Lincoln NE 68510.  Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
