Shirley J. Smith

July 17, 1941 — January 6, 2022

Shirley Jean (Woodhurst) Smith, 80, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at her daughter’s home in Harbine, Nebraska.  She was born July 17, 1941, in Perry, Missouri, to Hazzard and Dorothy Clary Woodhurst.  She married John Smith on May 28, 1960, and he proceeded her in death on September 28, 2004.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Rose Tracy, of Harbine, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Keleigh Grosso, Jerry Smith and D'Alaine Tracy; and six grandchildren.  She is also survived by four brothers, Roger Woodhurst, Jimmy Woodhurst, Brian Woodhurst, and Ronnie Woodhurst, all of Perry, Missouri and four sisters, Mary Bloomfield of Perry, Marie Lewandowski of Center Brenda Smith of Littleton, Colorado, and Ruth Ann Berrey of Paris.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her son William Roy “Billy” Smith (1961-2009), and three brothers, Billy, Neil, and Russell Woodhurst, all of Perry.

Shirley was a 1959 graduate of Perry High School.  After receiving her cosmetologist certification, she was a hairdresser for many years. After marriage, she and her husband moved to Colorado, where she lived much of her life.  For a brief time, Shirley and her family moved back to Perry, where she owned and operated Mom’s Café.  Before her retirement, Shirley worked at Moose Lodge #21 in Denver.  As her health began to fail, she moved to Nebraska to be near her daughter.  Shirley was an outstanding cook, just like her mother, and she also enjoyed finding a good bargain, singing, dancing, and doing volunteer work.

Services will not be held at this time.  A private remembrance will be held at a later date.
