Sue Ellen Diller Meredith was the eldest child of Harold E. “Spike” and Margaret C. “Marge” James Diller, born on April 27, 1944 in Baltimore, MD. The family moved to Fairbury, NE before Sue started school, where she attended St. Michael’s School kindergarten through 8th grade. During this time she took dance classes, even though she was known as a tomboy. She attended Fairbury High School grades 9-12, graduating in 1962.
Sue held several jobs while in school and afterwards. She worked at Fairmont’s Ice Cream Store while still in high school and after graduating she worked at Montgomery Ward as a bookkeeper and a window dresser, and she also dressed windows at McDonald’s Department Store. She was payroll secretary at Kellwood, as well as working on the cutting floor. She worked briefly on the production floor at Swingsters, and then was employed as a bookkeeper at Parks Heating & Air Conditioning.
In April of 1967 Sue married Dennis Meredith. Their son Jade Dennis was born on January 10, 1968 and daughter, Monica Sue, was born on April 13, 1970. The marriage ended in 1974.
In 1975, Sue met Duane “Tooley” Juhl. They remained partners for over 30 years, until Duane passed away in June 2006.
In 1986, Sue and Tooley bought a bar on the southwest side of the square and renamed it “Tooley’s”. They ran the bar together until they retired in 2005. During those years they made countless friends and thousands of joyful memories. They were avid Husker fans and held season tickets, enjoying tail-gating and many road trips to Memorial Stadium. They attended several bowl games and had accumulated a large collection of Husker memorabilia.
Sue was involved in bowling for many years, and enjoyed attending state tournaments with her team. She was very active in Relay for Life, and worked tirelessly to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed spending time with family & friends, and doing crafts. One of the highlights of Sue’s later years was traveling with her daughter, Monica, and son-in-law, Bob.
Sue passed away on November 5, 2014 at JCHC, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by brothers Tim Diller and Jim Diller & his wife, Judy; children Jade “JD” Meredith & wife Becky, and Paul Juhl all of Fairbury; Monica Meredith Heon & husband Bob of Deerfield, NH, Theresa Buchli & husband Dan of Alexandria, Anne Shoemaker & husband Randy and John Juhl & wife Dorothy all of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephew, great-nieces & great-nephews, and countless friends.
