Viola Marie Scheer

Viola Scheer, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 1, 2024, All Saints Day, in the company of her sons at the age of 97.  This kindhearted, hard-working woman, who cherished her family and faith will be dearly missed

Viola Marie Theye Scheer, oldest daughter of Herman and Katherine Herbst Theye, was born on March 19, 1927 south west of Fairbury on the farm her great grandfather, Henry Lenger, homesteaded.  She was baptized June 26, 1927 at the Zion Evangelical and Reform Church east of Gladstone and confirmed there with her brother Harold on July 27, 1941.

Viola attended grade school at Districts 28, 100 and 71 and graduated from Fairbury High School on May 25, 1944.  She worked at the Blue Bird Café in Fairbury as a waitress until she was united in marriage to Stephen Paul Scheer on April 12, 1945 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church by Monsignor O’Brien.  She joined the Catholic faith on July 22, 1945 and Confirmed in the Catholic faith on October 12, 1945.  She was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Three sons were born to Stephen and Viola; Daniel David, Martin Paul and Allen Kent.

Viola spent her life working beside her husband on the farm, caring for her family, being a housewife, enjoying her garden and flowers and researching family genealogy.  Stephen and Viola retired from farming in 1993, moving to Fairbury.

She is survived by two sons; Dan and wife Patsy Scheer of Staplehurst, NE and Allen Scheer of Fairbury NE.  Three grandchildren; Jeff Scheer and wife Kindra Fox of Lincoln, NE, Laurie Scheer and Lee Golden II of Vancouver, WA, and Valerie Thompson and her husband Shane Thompson of Lincoln, NE, two great-grandchildren Brynn Thompson and Mac Thompson of Lincoln, NE, her brother-in-law Steven Holliday of Fairbury NE and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Herman and Katherine Theye, husband Stephen Paul in 2008, son Martin Paul in 1992, brother and sister-in-law Harold and Elsie Theye, sister Eileen Holliday, brother-in-law, Francis and Dutch Scheer, sister-in-law, Pauline and Dale Arnold and nephews Kenneth Theye, Duane Arnold, Ron Arnold and Marvin Arnold.

Services will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Fairbury NE on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with the recitation of the Rosary at 10 am and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am.  No viewing.  Burial in the Fairbury Cemetery and a luncheon to follow.  Memorials to the Fairbury Cemetery Association or St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
