Walter D. Coordsen

Walter D. Coordsen, son of John and Edith (Bushong) Coordsen, was born November 11, 1940 in Fairbury, NE. He passed from this life on Monday, July 10, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, NE at the age of 76.

He attended school at the one room limestone school northeast of Gilead, NE and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1958. Walter was united in marriage with Marjure Ann Bodtke on June 25, 1961, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Gilead. They were blessed with three children during their 56 year marriage. He was a member of the National Guard for 8 years.

A life-long family farmer and cattleman in southeastern Nebraska, Walter chose not to retire as he could not imagine anything he would enjoy doing more. He was a progressive farmer, early adopting many farming techniques. He was one of the first in the area to plant turn rows which eliminated weed patches at the end of the field, to utilize electric center pivot irrigation, to adopt no-till farming and to use satellite technology to spray his crops.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards with friends, telling stories and jokes, traveling, driving his convertibles and collecting antique tractors. Walter also enjoyed reading about the lives and accomplishments of others in their obituaries periodically quipping with a smile, “you know, no one really knows if this person did all of those things.”

Walter is survived by his wife, Marjure, brother Bob and wife Gail, of Gainesville, FL, children Bradley and wife Carolyn of Jansen, NE, Brian and wife Biny of Bartlesville, OK, and Shari Luehring and husband Bill of Hebron and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. Walter was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend.

Those that preceded him in death are his parents; three brothers John, Ernest and George and sister Minnie Wolford.

The funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, July 13, 2017, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gilead. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery. Pastor Annette Minderman will be officiating. Visitation with family will be held Wednesday, July 12, from 6-8 PM, at Gerdes-Meyer funeral home in Fairbury.
Memorial donations will go to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Hebron Rescue Unit.

The family of Walter Coordsen wishes to thank the many friends and staff of the facilities that comforted and cared for Walter in his time of need.
