William A Monroe

April 8, 1928 — December 2, 2015

William Anson Monroe was born April 8, 1928, in Fairbury, Nebraska to Roy L. Monroe and Florence McDonnell Monroe. Bill attended Fairbury schools and in June of 1945 became a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad. In 1954 he was promoted to conductor working for the Rock Island until it closed down in 1980; Bill’s crew had the last train out of Fairbury.
He was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad working 6 years until he retired after 41 years.
Bill was the last living employee in Fairbury to have worked on steam engines.

On January 4, 1953, he was united in marriage with Ella Mae Janz, to them three children were born. Military, U.S. Army 1951-1953 in the Korean War.
Bill is a member of the United Methodist church, American Legion, V.F.W., Life member of Elks, Life member of United Transportation Union, Charter member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.

He is survived by wife, Ella Mae, sons Mark and wife Shirley of Fullerton, NE, Matt and fiancee, Darcee Wheeland of Hastings, NE, daughter Lisa and husband Max Hasselbring of Johnson, NE.
Eight grandchildren, Ryan Monroe and fiancee, Tina Lassley of Lincoln, NE, Kendall and husband Dustin Fencl of DeWitt, NE, Kylie Hasselbring, D.C. and Justin Hochstein of Omaha, NE, Kelsey and husband Lance Gulizia of Auburn, NE, Kaitlyn Monroe and fiancee, Zach Cambron of Hastings, NE, Kapri Monroe and Brytton Monroe of Hastings, NE. Step grandson, Robby and Natalie Marsh and daughters of Belvidere, NE.
Great Grandsons, Connor Monroe, Brayden Monroe and Logan Fencl, Cooper and Hudson Cambron and Grady Gulizia.
Nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy R. Monroe; sisters, Louise Jones, Lucile Singleton and Helen Stewart.

Services will be Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Fairbury with Pastor Fay Hubbard and Sharon Schuster officiating. Memorials to the Family’s Choice. Burial in the Fairbury Cemetery. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
